We had the opportunity to listen to “Look Around” by Richard Berger, and we absolutely loved its vibe. The song took us on an exhilarating journey, immersing us in its uplifting energy and nostalgic charm.
With an unmistakable '90s-inspired energy, “Look Around” radiates an uplifting yet laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal soundtrack for a carefree summer drive with the top down. The track is infused with swirling, effervescent synthesizers that create an electrifying yet soothing soundscape. Berger’s vocals perfectly complement this, carrying a buoyant and invigorating quality that feels effortlessly energizing. We were truly impressed and thoroughly enjoyed the smoothness, impeccable control, and effortless soaring he displayed, making for an incredibly captivating experience for the listener.
When we heard the opening lyrics:
“Open my window and I pull the blinds up / pour me some coffee / it’s a brand new day,”
-seamlessly align with the song’s vibrant musical arrangement. This imagery immediately sets the tone, painting a picture of optimism and renewal. The vocal delivery is understated yet brimming with warmth, exuding an unforced sincerity that invites listeners to embrace a more positive outlook. The nostalgic essence of late-'80s and early-'90s synth-pop is palpable, particularly in the luminous synth melodies, which feel exhilaratingly fresh. Few tracks since Commodore's “Easy” have featured such a perfectly placed, irresistibly catchy synth motif, one that practically demands to be mimed every time it appears. The drum fills, dynamic and expressive, serve as the perfect punctuation, heightening the song’s immersive experience.
As the vocals progressed, we found ourselves drawn to the repeated harmonies that followed each phrase. When Berger sings:
“Just look around,”
-the moment becomes almost transcendental, an airy, dreamlike sensation washes over the listener. It’s the kind of track that encourages introspection, yet simultaneously transports you into a world where the simplest moments feel extraordinary. We closed our eyes and envisioned our own perfect days and what we wished to see, where simply looking around allowed us to fully appreciate life’s beauty. The ability to evoke such vivid imagery makes this song both deeply personal and universally relatable, a rare and impressive feat.
The interlude further amplifies this sensation, conjuring the carefree exhilaration of a sun-drenched summer day, like the rush of sliding down a water slide, pure and exhilarating. “Look Around” carries the listener on a journey, offering a sense of escape and possibility, making it not just a song but an experience.
Inspired by real-life moments of encouraging his son to break free from melancholic reflections, Berger shifts away from his previously introspective and somber lyricism, embracing a more radiant and uplifting perspective in “Look Around”. His intention is clear, to spread positivity, especially in challenging times.
Produced in his home studio in Los Angeles, California, the track exemplifies Berger’s commitment to crafting music that resonates on both an emotional and nostalgic level.
Another intriguing aspect of his artistic identity is his self-coined term, “Retroverts,” a concept describing those who seek comfort in nostalgia and find joy in revisiting past experiences. This notion beautifully encapsulates the essence of Look Around, a song that not only celebrates the present but also honors the sentimental charm of the past.
We loved this song and we think you will too. You can find this release on any major platform, make sure to playlist, stream, and share "Look Around" by Richard Berger.
